97-year-old woman dies of hypothermia after being left outside
The death of 97-year-old Corrye Brewer has been ruled a homicide after investigators say she was intentionally left outside by a family member in frigid conditions without any means of survival. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating what many are calling a heartbreaking case of elder neglect turned fatal.
Elderly Woman With Cognitive Impairment Found Dead in Freezing Temperatures
Brewer, who reportedly suffered from cognitive impairment, was last seen alive on January 24, 2025, in the Peyton area. Her disappearance sparked concern when she was reported missing the following day. Tragically, on January 27, her body was discovered outside an abandoned home near Calhan Highway.
According to weather reports, temperatures had dropped as low as 16°F, with snow and strong winds blowing through the area at the time Brewer is believed to have died.
Autopsy Reveals Death by Hypothermia — Ruled a Homicide
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office concluded that Brewer died of hypothermia and officially ruled the manner of death a homicide. Shocking details from the coroner’s report allege that Brewer was intentionally abandoned by her daughter—left outside without her walker, cell phone, or any way to call for help.
Authorities believe Brewer was incapable of seeking shelter on her own due to her condition, raising serious concerns about criminal negligence and potential elder abuse.
Family Demands Accountability
Brewer’s grandchildren, who live in Atlanta and were reportedly estranged from the Colorado relatives she lived with, are demanding justice.
“Our grandmother is deceased, and somebody needs to be held accountable for that,” said Paul Brewer Jr., her grandson. “This wasn’t an accident. This was inhumane.”
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the case is still under active investigation and will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office. As of April 14, 2025, no arrests or charges have been announced.
