North Carolina voters are being told to trust Michael Whatley with a United States Senate seat.

Roy Cooper vs. Michael Whatley: The NC Senate Race That Could Decide the Midterms

The Republican candidate — former North Carolina GOP chairman, former RNC chairman, and now President Trump’s hand-picked Senate hopeful — has spent months selling himself as a fierce defender of families, law and order, and protecting our children.

Reporting has revealed that Whatley knowingly promoted and elevated Harvey West Jr. — a convicted child sex offender who served six years in prison for sexually abusing multiple underage girls — into positions of power inside the North Carolina Republican Party.

The original bombshell reporting broke from the Asheville Watchdog. West himself admitted Whatley knew about his criminal past — and still chose to give him power.

The Child Predator Whatley Chose to Empower

Back in 1999, West was a 28-year-old police officer in Beaufort County when he was arrested and charged with the statutory rape of three teenage girls — two of them just 14 years old.

He ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and was sentenced to six years in prison. Upon his release he was placed on the sex offender registry.

After serving his time, West tried to rebuild his life — and he turned to Republican politics. By the time Michael Whatley took over as North Carolina GOP chairman in 2019, West’s criminal record was already public knowledge.

It had even forced him to resign as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention back in 2012 when his past resurfaced.

Any responsible leader would have kept a convicted child sex offender as far away from party leadership as possible.

Whatley did the exact opposite.

Whatley Knew — And Promoted Him Anyway

According to the original Asheville Watchdog investigation, Whatley appointed Harvey West to the powerful Plan of Organization Committee — the body that writes and interprets the rules for the entire North Carolina Republican Party — in both 2021 and 2024.

West also rose to become chairman of the 1st Congressional District committee, giving him influence over volunteers, events, and election operations in that region.

While some of the district-level moves involved local elections, Whatley’s own state-level appointments and continued support gave West legitimacy, access, and real power inside the party machine.

And here’s the part that should make every parent sick:

West himself confirmed that Whatley knew about his prison time and criminal history.

In interviews, West admitted Whatley initially didn’t like him (partly because West had backed one of Whatley’s opponents for chairman). But over time, Whatley “recognized his worth,” used his skills, and elevated him anyway — reportedly because he saw West’s “intentions” and “heart.”

When the scandal blew up on Whatley in March 2026, Whatley’s campaign did not come clean.

They did not apologize to North Carolina parents. They did not explain why they thought a man convicted of sexually abusing 14-year-old girls deserved leadership roles shaping party rules.

Instead, Whatley’s team called the reporting “garbage and lies,” declined interviews with serious outlets, and retreated to friendly echo chambers. Whatley himself has repeatedly sidestepped direct questions in public.

This is the behavior of a man with something serious to hide — not the behavior of someone fit to serve in the United States Senate.

Once the story came out, North Carolina parents refused to stay silent. In May 2026, they launched the “Parents Against Whatley” coalition — a group of more than 60 parents from 19 counties across the state, including unaffiliated voters and even some Republicans.

Their message was: Whatley put children at risk to protect his political allies. His decisions were “despicable.” They are now demanding accountability at the ballot box in November.

Even the North Carolina Republican Party itself was forced into damage control.

At the 2026 state convention, delegates passed new rules banning convicted sex offenders and child abusers from holding party leadership positions — a direct reaction to the West-Whatley scandal that had embarrassed the party and exposed serious leadership failures under Whatley’s watch.

While Michael Whatley travels the state asking voters to trust him with a U.S. Senate seat so he can “protect families” and “fight for our children,” the record shows something very different.
