Shyhied Ivey has been charged after police say a cheating prank turned violent when gunfire broke out near Freedom Drive and Wesley Village Road in Charlotte, leaving five people in danger.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A “cheating prank” turned into gunfire in Charlotte — and now a 20-year-old man is facing a stack of charges after police say he opened fire on a car full of people.
According to an official affidavit, Shyhied Eugene Ivey, 20, is accused of pulling up beside his girlfriend and unleashing gunshots into a moving vehicle after getting heated over what he believed was real cheating.
WHAT STARTED AS A JOKE
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say it happened on April 4, 2026, around 11:38 p.m., near Freedom Drive and Wesley Village Road in Charlotte.
Investigators say the prank started earlier that night when the victim, Nevaeh Covington, and her friends were out grabbing food at Camp North End.
But things took a turn when Covington and a male friend allegedly decided to play a prank on Ivey — making him believe she was cheating.
According to the report, the friend called Ivey pretending to be another man involved with Covington… and that’s when everything went left.
Authorities say Covington shared her location with Ivey, and shortly after, he allegedly began tailgating their car in a black Nissan sedan, driving aggressively and trying to force them to pull over.
Victims told police Ivey was angry, calling repeatedly, and even fired shots into the air while chasing them.
SHOTS FIRED INTO CAR WITH MULTIPLE PEOPLE INSIDE
Both vehicles stopped near an intersection. Police say Ivey pulled up next to the victims’ red Nissan Altima and fired multiple shots directly into the car, shattering a rear window.
Investigators say five people were inside the vehicle at the time:
- Nevaeh Covington
- Gernala Covington
- Quimya James
- Damion Rann
- Nadiya Cousart-Thompson
Miraculously, no serious injuries were reported.
Officials said they have surveillance footage of the shooting. Officers also recovered a 7.62×39 shell casing at the scene.
TEXT MESSAGE: “STOP PLAYIN WIMME BRO”
One victim told police Ivey sent a message just minutes before the shooting that read:
“stop playin wimme bro”
Ivey is now facing multiple charges, including:
- 5 counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill
- Discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle
- Domestic violence offense
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
Police also noted Ivey has a prior conviction for motor vehicle larceny and was already on probation.
