Missing 7-year-old boy in Tar River
The search for a missing 7-year-old boy in the Tar River near Franklinton, North Carolina News, has shifted from a rescue mission to a recovery effort, authorities confirmed on Monday. The child, whose identity has not been publicly released, fell into the river on Monday evening while playing with friends. His sister tried to rescue him, but the river’s swift current carried him away.
Emergency responders launched an intensive search immediately after the incident, with crews facing difficult conditions, including cold water temperatures of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit and a river depth of 12 to 15 feet. Minor flooding in the area further complicated search operations.
Despite these challenges, authorities utilized advanced technology such as sonar, underwater drones, and aerial drones to locate the missing child. However, after more than 24 hours with no success and searching the river that stretched 3 miles, officials determined that the likelihood of survival had diminished.
Franklin County Emergency Management Director Nicholas Thorpe announced the transition from search and rescue to recovery.
“While the search will continue, our primary focus has changed to bringing closure to the family,” Thorpe stated.
The boy’s family has remained on-site, clinging to hope and requesting prayers from the community. Shirbartis Alston, a cousin representing the family, expressed their gratitude for the support.
“We are still believing in God, we’re still praying and hoping that everything is going to be alright,” Alston said.
As the search continues, the community stands united, offering prayers and support for the family.
