Share

Coaching legend Phil Padgett, 63, has pa*sed away battling cancer in his home Friday night.

Padgett had just come home from CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern last week. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, and after it did go into remission, it returned earlier this year.

As we told you Thursday, Padgett spent 33 years at Southwest High School from the moment he started in 1988, leading the Stallions to a 295-69 record in his 27 years as head coach. Padgett also led the Stallions to seven state finals, bringing home four state championships (three 2-A and one 1-A).

He will truly be missed.
