North Carolina Mother Charged After 3-Year-Old Son Fatally Shoots 5-Year-Old Daughter in Henderson

Morgan Deans charged

Morgan Nicole Deans is facing consequences after her 3-year-old son, Waylon Lee, got his hands on a firearm—leading to the fatal shooting of his 5-year-old sister, Avah Gracelynn.

Avah Gracelynn, a bright and beloved 5-year-old girl from North Carolina, tragically lost her life due to an accidental shooting by her 3-year-old brother.

The incident, which unfolded Friday morning inside the family’s home, has raised serious questions about parental responsibility and gun safety. Henderson Police didn’t waste time, arresting Deans the same day and charging her with misdemeanor sell/give weapon to minor—a charge that barely scratches the surface of this devastating loss.

Court documents obtained by The North Carolina Beat reveal that Deans “unlawfully and willfully” left a firearm accessible inside the home, making it easy for her toddler to reach the deadly weapon, resulting in a young girl’s life cut short, and a 3-year-old now forever tied to a tragedy.

Despite the severity of the incident, the court gave Deans a $5,000 unsecured bond. She will appear in Vance County court on March 18, 2025.

  1. Despite the severity, she was released on $5,000 unsecured bond?.. That sounds like favoritism and bias to me!. Why were they so polite to her??.
