Authorities in North Carolina are on high alert after John Nigh, a man accused of shooting at three Onslow County sheriff’s deputies last summer, escaped from the Craven County Jail.
On Sunday, January 26, at 4 p.m., Nigh was missing from his cell, according to police.
How the Escape Happened
Deputies said Nigh’s cellmates played a role in the escape. The inmates reportedly helped Nigh remove ceiling grating as he accessed a utility ceiling chase, and climbed onto the roof via ventilation housing. To cover for Nigh’s absence, two of his cellmates allegedly stuffed a mattress to make it appear as though he was still asleep on his bunk.
Why Nigh is Considered Dangerous
Nigh, described as 6’2” and 190 pounds with a “JMN” tattoo on his upper left arm and a cross tattoo on his upper right arm, has a violent history with law enforcement. Last summer, he was accused of firing two shots at Onslow County deputies attempting to arrest him in Hubert.
Authorities warn that he has been armed during previous encounters and should be considered dangerous.
Search Underway
The Craven County Investigations Bureau, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force are actively searching for Nigh.
Law enforcement is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information about his whereabouts immediately.
