The judge who oversaw Green’s trial, Judge Gregory Weeks, has urged the North Carolina parole board to consider his release.
According to an ABC News report, Judge Weeks revealed that for nearly three decades, crucial information was kept from the courts about Green’s case and it has haunted him. A forensic blood analyst failed to inform them that multiple tests conducted on evidence from the crime scene returned negative or inconclusive results for blood. That revelation casts doubt on the prosecution‘s claim that Green’s blood was found in the vehicle, suggesting it may not have belonged to him at all.

From the beginning, Green maintained his innocence and is now filled with hope regarding the possibility of parole. He expressed gratitude for the judge‘s request for his release, calling it a “significant” moment in his long journey.
[The fact that the judge who] presided over my trial asked that I be paroled is significant…It speaks volumes about this case, and I’m overwhelmingly grateful,” he said.
The parole board will take at least a month to weigh their decision on whether or not they should grant Green parole.
