A dramatic high-speed chase in the early Tuesday morning, Mar. 11, ended with a truck plunging into Falls Lake, and now police is searching for the driver.
According to a press release from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began shortly after 2 a.m. when a deputy spotted a vehicle driving recklessly near the intersection of Geer Street and US 70. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to comply, leading officers on a six-mile pursuit down Geer Street.
The chase came to a halt when the driver veered onto a dirt road near Falls Lake. Deputies chose to terminate the pursuit due to safety concerns.
A short time later, authorities discovered the truck submerged near the I-85 North bridge. The vehicle was unoccupied, suggesting that the driver may have escaped before it sank.

The Durham Sheriff’s Office Search and Recovery team successfully recovered the truck and is continuing to search the surrounding area for the missing driver.
At this time, authorities have not released further details regarding the driver’s identity or any potential charges.
