Delta State Student Found Hanging Near Pickleball Courts, Prompting Campus-Wide Outcry and Investigation
The Delta State University campus is in mourning after the tragic discovery of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student, who was found hanging from a tree early Monday morning, September 15, 2025.
WHAT HAPPENED TO TREY REED?
Around 7:05 a.m., Delta State campus employees discovered Reed’s body hanging from a tree near the university’s pickleball courts, centrally located on campus.
The area was immediately cordoned off by university police, and the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office was called to remove the body. According to initial reports, no signs of foul play have been discovered. However, a full autopsy report has not yet been released.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is now leading the case, with help from the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department and other local agencies. Although officials have not labeled the death suspicious, the circumstances have left many demanding transparency.
The campus remains on alert, although Delta State University officials stated there is no current threat to student safety.
To give the campus time to grieve, all classes and centennial anniversary events were canceled for the day.

For him to get his black self up there and say he really believes that this man hung himself FROM A TREE. this man needs to be fired.
I pray for his family and friends🙏🏻 I’m sorry for all of you on this loss. I pray for a peace that surpasses all understanding.
In the event if there is foul play after investigation than I pray justice is served swiftly. In any circumstance God knows all and God be with you.

Only racists would call this a lynching.
It’s an atrocity- he’s a young kid that had hugs life ahead him. There’s gotta be video footage of events- locals should demand the school release the footage.
May God guide everyone’s hearts and clear their minds of hatred, Amen.
It is a lynching… only racist would hang a black person from a tree… it definitely wasn’t suicide, as a black person in college ain’t no way ima commit suicide knowing i have a future ahead of me… Call it what it is!
Now what was the purpose of that first line? Racists and racist apologists are trying so damn hard to redefine and weoponize the word against marginalized groups. Whether or not people are rushing to conclusions, if you had sympathy for the black experience in America and the awful history their ancestors (even in modern history) endured you would consider how traumatic it could be for a black person to see or read about another black person hanging from a tree. You could’ve said everything else and left it at that. But you chose to further engage in this asanine culture war with the side that insists on people forgetting or becoming desensitized to American history. Every accusation is an admission with y’all.
That is either incredibly nieve or absolute denial. Im flabergaslit to think that you or anyone else in this country cant see that there is reason to believe this was a murder. Look at Americas very recent history. Look at the rise of hate groups today. Look at the state of current affairs. A Nazi hate group was litterally protesting in Southern California yesterday in honor of Charlie Kirk chanting “White men fight back”.
I hope this wasnt a hate crime and a suicide is also tragic but pretending things are FINE and that there is no room for foul play when there is a serious possibility that there is, is incredibly disrespectful to this young man and to the community whom this effects deeply.
Huh? Such an ignorant ridiculous comment.
This was a Lynching, call it what it was!!
Was an arm and leg broken???
Several articles state that the medical examiner found no broken bones. The autopsy is still pending, so that may give more information but it appears the information about broken bones is incorrect.
This was a lynching.
