Curtis Cochran Steps Down Amid Sexual Misconduct Charges
Longtime Sheriff Curtis Cochran has stepped down with his tail between his legs amid some nasty sexual misconduct charges. The 72-year-old lawman called it quits July 1, 2025, just hours before he was supposed to face the music at a removal hearing.
It ain’t just regular charges… we talkin’ about felony restraint, sexual battery, and even soliciting prostitution.

WHAT HE’S ACCUSED OF
Court docs allege Cochran got real bold with two women, both tied to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. One woman said while riding with him, he locked the doors, made disgusting advances, and told her he could “help her out” if she played along and used his name. Another woman said he touched her inappropriately while she was literally trying to get out the car.
To make it worse, Cochran’s also facing tribal court charges like oppression in office and abusive sexual contact.
SBI & FBI IN THE MIX
Both the North Carolina SBI and FBI are digging into this, and word is there’s actual video footage backing up these claims. Cochran might’ve thought he could sneak away quietly. He’s due back in court August 5, 2025.
After Cochran stepped down, Chief Deputy Brian Kirkland slid into the acting sheriff role to keep the county from falling apart.
