Brooks Ambrose, a 1-year-old boy, was killed in a tragic accident on NC Highway 42 in Wilson County after being struck by a tractor-trailer, authorities say.

WILSON COUNTY, N.C. — A devastating tragedy has shaken a North Carolina family after a 1-year-old boy lost his life in what authorities are calling a heartbreaking and unexpected accident.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 8:10 p.m. Tuesday night along NC Highway 42 near Sadie Road.

Troopers say little Brooks Ambrose was walking in the left eastbound lane when he was struck by a 2019 white Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction.

Officials confirmed the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver stayed on-site and is fully cooperating with investigators. As of now, no charges have been filed, and authorities say there is no immediate indication of speeding, impairment, or reckless driving.

Instead, investigators are calling it a tragic freak accident.

Family members, overwhelmed with grief, described the situation as unimaginable — sharing that Brooks had reportedly been playing outside before somehow making his way onto the highway.
