Police say man set fireworks off inside bathroom at school in North Carolina

An 18-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after police say he set off fireworks in a bathroom stall at Clayton High School in Clayton, North Carolina.

Amir Dayvon Coates was charged with felony burning of a school building, felony malicious use of an explosive/incendiary device causing property damage, felony burning or causing to burn certain public buildings, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct at school.

According to authorities, around 2:15 p.m., Wednesday, during school dismissal, inside a bathroom, the fireworks went off. Some students thought someone was inside the school shooting. According to authorities, heavy smoke filled the hallway and damaged a wall.

A 16-year-old was also charged but he will be charged in the North Carolina Juvenile Courts.

Coates was jailed on a $125,000 secured bond.
