Basketball player who had dreams of going to NBA gunned down, teenager charged in his death

Paul Tate Jr, a 21-year-old freshman at Livingstone College and basketball player is dead after an altercation with a group of people led to his demise.

Charlotte-Meclkenburg police said they responded to a shooting Wednesday at the Rozelle Crossing shopping center off Mount-Holly Huntersville Road in Northwest Charlotte.

Witnesses told police that an altercation broke out amongst a group of people followed by seven to eight gunshots.

Police arrested a 16-year-old Wednesday night and charged them with murder.

Tate’s mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said she didn’t get to say goodbye to her son.

I didn’t get to say goodbye, nothing, she said. My son ain’t coming home no more.

Tate’s mom said he was a popular kid who loved basketball and played at West Mecklenburg High School. She said her son had dreams of going to the NBA someday. Tate was also active with the Benton Youth Initiative, a youth program based in Charlotte.
