RALEIGH, NC — Cops revealed Thursday that a third person has now come forward, claiming they were sexually assaulted by a UNC Rex nurse.
The accused nurse, Brayan Alvarez-Ortiz, 28, made his first court appearance Thursday, and prosecutors wasted no time making it clear they believe this is far from over.
Alvarez-Ortiz is already facing a mountain of serious charges, including:
-
Four counts of sexual contact under the context of medical treatment
-
Second-degree forcible sex offense
-
Four counts of first-degree kidnapping
-
Four counts of sexual battery
During court, state prosecutors asked the judge to hold him without bond, revealing they’ve already authorized even more charges as new victims continue to surface. His next court date is set for Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 9 a.m.
ALLEGED ASSAULTS INSIDE THE HOSPITAL
According to prosecutors, the first two victims were on different hospital units, had undergone surgery, and were allegedly assaulted while recovering under sedation.
Police say the alleged assaults occurred Monday, Nov. 3, but one patient didn’t report what happened until Nov. 19 — a delay experts say is common in cases like this.
UNC Rex has not disclosed which unit Alvarez-Ortiz worked in, but confirmed it is reviewing all of his activities while employed.
UNC REX: “WE ARE OUTRAGED”
UNC Health released a strongly worded statement Thursday, saying it is “outraged by the nature of these allegations.”
Hospital officials said once a complaint was received, they immediately launched an investigation, reported the nurse to the NC Board of Nursing, terminated his employment, and cooperated fully with Raleigh police.
Records show Alvarez-Ortiz was fired Nov. 25. His nursing license was suspended Nov. 26 and he was arrested Dec. 10.
UNC Rex also confirmed it filed a formal complaint with the NC Nursing Board.
Raleigh police say they expect additional victims to come forward and are urging anyone who believes they may have been affected to speak up.
