The Landings of Smithfield is under fire again—and this time, it’s over allegations that a staff member assaulted one of its most vulnerable residents.

Tameka Jeffries, 38, of Selma, has officially been charged with felony patient abuse and assault on a person with a disability after investigators say she shoved an 88-year-old woman with dementia and disabilities to the ground. The victim reportedly suffered a broken hip and underwent surgery following the incident, which took place July 24, 2025, inside the assisted living facility.
Jeffries was arrested August 24, but was released just hours later on a $20,000 unsecured bond.
Facility Already Had a History
What makes this even more disturbing is that The Landings of Smithfield, located at 200 Kellie Drive, was already on the state’s radar. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the facility was slapped with a $2,000 fine in July 2024—just a year earlier—for failures in personal care and supervision.Â
Currently, the facility holds a one-star state rating.
