North Carolina Woman Accused of Killing Husband After Domestic Argument in Union County

Patty Griffin charged with second-degree murder in husband Dennis Griffin shooting death Monroe NC Winding Way

Friday afternoon,  deputies say a woman shot and killed her husband inside their Monroe home — then allegedly tried to cover up evidence before law enforcement arrived.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Winding Way in Monroe around 2 p.m. after reports of a shooting.

When authorities arrived, they found Dennis Griffin suffering from a gunshot wound. Officials say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Patty Griffin, 74, initially claimed the shooting was accidental. However, during the investigation, deputies say Griffin later admitted she and her husband had been arguing before she allegedly retrieved a .38-caliber handgun and shot him in the chest.

Authorities also claim Griffin attempted to hide evidence before deputies got to the residence.

She was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder. Jail records show she is currently being held without bond at the Union County Jail.

Adding to the confusion, the Union County Sheriff’s Office initially released information identifying the suspect as Peggy Griffin, age 74. However, court documents and jail inmate records reportedly identify the suspect as Patty Griffin, 73.

Officials have not released additional details about what led up to the deadly argument or what evidence investigators believe was hidden.

The investigation remains ongoing.
