0

An 18-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 28-year-old man. Police say the tragic events unfolded late Friday night in the parking lot of the Walmart on Greenville Boulevard.

What Happened?

Around 10 p.m., Greenville police were flagged down by bystanders reporting an unresponsive man in a car. Upon arrival, officers found 28-year-old Jhari Henderson suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency responders, Henderson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Armoni Whitfield from Ayden, North Carolina, was arrested shortly after in her hometown. Authorities believe Whitfield specifically targeted Henderson, though the motive behind the fatal shooting remains unclear.

Ongoing Investigation

The Greenville Police Department has not released additional details about the relationship between Whitfield and Henderson or the potential reasons for the murder. However, they have said that this was not a random act of violence.

Whitfield is currently being held in the Pitt County Detention Center without bond as the investigation continues.

South Carolina man last seen with his missing girlfriend in Charlotte, arrested for DUI and fleeing police

Authorities in South Carolina have arrested 25-year-old Setoby Armstrong for DUI and failing to stop for blue lights. Armstrong is the same man who was last seen with his missing girlfriend, 22-year-old Ta’Haley Payton. The couple had traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, to celebrate Payton’s birthday, but she has not been seen since November 19.

Setoby Armstrong, 25, was arrested in South Carolina on charges of DUI and failing to stop for police.

Armstrong was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after fleeing from police while live streaming on Facebook. His live stream started at 11:42 p.m., according to the social media post.

In the footage obtained by The North Carolina Beat, Armstrong can be seen sitting in his car wearing shades and a hoodie. The video, shot in near darkness, shows the faint glow of headlights from a vehicle behind him. Moments later, blue police lights flash.

Appearing agitated, Armstrong removes his shades and frequently glances into his rearview mirror, watching the officer. He pulls over briefly but moments later appears to take a deep breath and suddenly hit the gas, fleeing the officer.

Bishop T.D. Jakes Files Defamation Lawsuit Over Sexual Assault Allegations

0

Pastor and motivational speaker Bishop T.D. Jakes, founder of The Potter’s House, has filed a federal defamation lawsuit against Duane Youngblood, a former pastor from Homestead, Pennsylvania. The case stems from allegations made during an October podcast episode of Larry Reid Live, where Youngblood accused Jakes of sexual abuse that allegedly occurred nearly 40 years ago.

Duane Youngblood, a former pastor of Higher Call World Outreach Ministries, speaking at a public event. Youngblood, a registered sex offender, is accused of making defamatory claims against Bishop T.D. Jakes during a viral podcast interview.

The Allegations and Lawsuit

Youngblood, previously convicted of sexually assaulting a minor and listed as a lifetime registered sex offender, alleged that Jakes attempted to groom and assault him during a visit to Pittsburgh decades ago. According to Youngblood, the encounter left lasting psychological damage. The episode, titled The Abused Become the Abuser, went viral, leading to widespread speculation about the platform’s credibility and Youngblood’s story.

Watch Tonight at 7 PM EST: Discussing Bishop T.D. Jakes’ Defamation Lawsuit

In his lawsuit, Jakes vehemently denies the claims, labeling them as fabrications meant to deflect attention from Youngblood’s criminal past. The suit accuses Youngblood of using these allegations to extort $6 million from Jakes under the threat of continued public shaming. A demand letter allegedly sent to Jakes on November 15 outlined these financial terms.

A Legacy Under Attack

Jakes, 67, has been a spiritual leader for decades, with a congregation exceeding 30,000 members. Known for counseling U.S. presidents and hosting national events, Jakes asserts that these allegations jeopardize his philanthropic work and health. On November 24, he experienced a medical crisis during a sermon, which his church attributed to the stress of the ordeal.

Jakes’ team argues that Youngblood’s intent was clear—financial gain through public harassment. Meanwhile, Youngblood has yet to publicly respond to the legal action.

Mother Says 30-Year-Old North Carolina Man Inappropriately Touched Her 13-Year-Old Daughter

1

A disturbing incident has led a North Carolina mother to file a police report against 30-year-old Courvoisier Rasheed Lineberger, alleging he inappropriately touched her 13-year-old daughter. Candias Mcclain, the victim’s mother, shared her story with The North Carolina Beat.

Candias’ daughter received a crime victims’ rights information packet for her case.

Candias said she was at home playing spades on Saturday, Nov. 2, when her oldest son came and asked if she knew that a “guy named Vossi had touched her 13-year-old, whose name will not be disclosed. The house where the alleged abuse took place belonged to a woman named “Tiger” who’s real name is Teresa Ann White, the victim’s best friend’s mother.

During our brief investigation, we found that White is also a bail bondsman with McConnuighey Bail Bonds, according to records from the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Candias said a girl who had lived with White at one point was friends with Lineberger, which explains why he was over White’s home. Upon learning of the allegations, Candias immediately called White, asking why she had not told her about Lineberger allegedly touching her child.

I called her and said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me that this guy named Vossi molested my daughter?’ and she was like, ‘Hold the f*ck up, first of all, don’t call my phone like that,'” Candias explained. “I told her, ‘You don’t tell me how to feel. You’re a f*cking adult—why wouldn’t you tell me?'”

Candias stated that her daughter needed to use the bathroom when Lineberger allegedly followed her inside. She claimed that Lineberger exposed himself, placed her daughter on the sink, and allegedly began kissing her 13-year-old daughter’s body inappropriately.

A Frustrating Encounter with Tiger

Candias said she hung up the phone on White. The next day, Nov. 3, Candias learned of a group chat that had been created to discuss the incident. However, even after their phone call the day before, Candias said that instead of reaching out to her, White continued to contact her 13-year-old daughter.

When Candias and White finally spoke on civil terms, Candias said White explained that the reason she didn’t tell her what allegedly happened was because she had “handled it.” However, Candias felt that White should have still told her, even if she claimed to have “handled it.”

“I told her, ‘You were still supposed to let me know because the way you handled it isn’t the way I would handle it,'” cANDIAS said she told White.

To us it sounded like a cover-up behind the phrase “handled it.”

Disturbing Evidence of Online Messages

Candias said she went to the Kings Mountain Police Department and filed a police report against Lineberger the following day, Sunday, Nov. 3. According to a police report obtained by The North Carolina Beat, the incident occurred on October 4, 2024, at White’s house on Grace Street.

According to Candias, detectives recovered her daughter’s phone after Lineberger allegedly sent her daughter photos and videos of other young girls.

“The reason they took her phone is because Vossi was sending my daughter videos of him sleeping with other young girls,” Candias said.

In Facebook messenger messages obtained by The North Carolina Beat, a Facebook user named “Vossy Lineberger” is allegedly messaging the 13-year-old daughter. The messages don’t have a date, but at 1:53 a.m., Lineberger allegedly sends a rolling eye emoji in response to a question mark from the 13-year-old.

Lineberger allegedly messages back, saying, “It’s smoke or something,” to which the 13-year-old asks, “What are you talking about?” Lineberger then responds, “Just asking lol… I can’t text you?” The 13-year-old asks why he is messaging her “anyways,” and Lineberger allegedly hearts her message.

30-year-old Courvoisier Rasheed Lineberger

He then points out that she accepted his request, suggesting that he didn’t know they still had a “problem.” The 13-year-old explains that she accepted it because “it’s Facebook, and I don’t use it.” Lineberger allegedly sends a rolling eye emoji, and the 13-year-old responds with a long message saying she felt like what he did was wrong.

“I also feel like you should’ve never done it in the first place because you’re a grown-a*s man and I’m a little-a*s girl, and I know that you know it’s wrong… you just won’t admit it,” the 13-year-old said in the Facebook messages to Lineberger.

Candias’s 13-year-old daughter continued and said “You literally got a whole daughter, & you fw little a*s girls… ts not coo. Ian tell anybody but Mama Tiger, but you still wrong asfk & and you needa grow tf up.”

Tiger responds to accusations regarding the incident at her home

On Monday, The North Carolina Beat reached out to White for a statement regarding the allegations. White claimed that she was unaware of what had happened until her daughter told her. She said she and her five children live at the Grace Street address, but she also had a friend who was staying with her at the time of this incident.

“ME AND MY FIVE KIDS LIVE HERE, AND I HAD A FRIEND LIVING WITH ME ALSO,” WHITE SAID. “THE STUFF THAT HAPPENED INVOLVED THE GIRL WHO WAS LIVING WITH ME  FRIEND, (LINEBERGER), WHO CAME TO STAY THE NIGHT WITH MY FRIEND AND HIS GIRLFRIEND.”

White said the story she was told was that Lineberger asked Candias’s 13-year-old daughter to be his “besti.”  She claimed she didn’t know what led to this 30-year-old man asking a 13-year-old to be his “bestie”. White said she was at work when she learned that Lineberger had asked the victim that.

“WHAT WAS TOLD TO ME WAS THAT VOSS ASKED [THE VICTIM] TO BE HIM AND HIS GIRLFRIEND’S BESTIE,” WHITE TOLD THE NORTH CAROLINA BEAT. “AND [THE 13-YEAR-OLD] SAID ‘OKAY.’ AFTER THAT, [THE VICTIM] AND MY DAUGHTER WENT OUTSIDE, AND THEY STAYED OUT UNTIL LIKE 6 IN THE MORNING.”

According to White, the next morning when she woke up, her daughter and the victim were still outside. When they came inside, they went to the room where White’s friend was staying. White said she felt like they were talking about her because she had just told them to come inside after being out until 6 a.m., but she claims that wasn’t the case.

“BY THE TIME I GOT TO WORK, WHICH IS FROM 7 P.M. TO 7 A.M., THAT’S WHEN I RECEIVED THE MESSAGE SAYING, ‘OH, THIS HAPPENED… THAT HAPPENED,’” WHITE EXPLAINED. “I TOLD THE GIRL THAT SHE NEEDED TO PUT HIM THE F*CK OUT OF THE HOUSE NOW, AND SHE DID.”

White claimed that she told her friend that if something did happen, it would be “a whole charge,” but said her friend put Lineberger out. Once she learned what had happened, White claimed she was never “told that.”

“I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT,” WHITE SAID. “ALL I WAS TOLD… GODDERN… WAS THAT HE WAS IN THE BATHROOM WITH HER, HE TRIED TO KISS HER, AND THEN HE LEFT.”

Teresa Ann White is a bail bondsman and the owner of the home where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly molested. She goes by “Tiger”.

In an audio recording obtained by The North Carolina Beat, White can be heard discussing the incident, telling someone, “And leave me the f*ck up outta this. I’m 37 years old, I don’t have time for this, and if it was that serious, then Voss would have had charges that night… I would’ve called the police here.”

When we played that recording for White and asked her why she didn’t call Candias to inform her as a parent about what she had heard, especially with Lineberger being in the bathroom with a 13-year-old girl, she hung up on us.

We have reached out to the Kings Mountain Police Department for an update on their investigation.

YSL Trial Closing Arguments Set to Begin Monday: What to Expect

After months of testimony, the highly publicized YSL RICO trial is nearing its conclusion. Closing arguments are scheduled to begin on Monday, marking the final phase before the jury deliberates the fate of defendants Yak Gotti, and Shannon Stillwell.

A Recap of the Trial

Prosecutors argue that the group YSL (Young Slime Life), engaged in gang-related activities, including drug trafficking and violent crimes. Defense attorneys, however, maintain that YSL is a legitimate record label unfairly targeted by law enforcement and the Fulton County DA’s Office.

High Stakes for Yak Gotti and Shannon Stillwell

Among the defendants, Yak Gotti and Shannon Stillwell have faced some of the most damning accusations, with the prosecution presenting evidence trying to ty them to alleged criminal activities. Their defense teams have countered by challenging the credibility of witnesses and the validity of the charges.

The question on everyone’s mind: will the jury convict, or will the evidence presented fail to meet the burden of proof?

What Happens Next?

Closing arguments give both sides one last opportunity to sway the jury. Prosecutors are expected to make their case by trying to link YSL members to crimes. Meanwhile, defense attorneys will aim to cast doubt on the prosecution’s theory, showing jurors inconsistencies and urging the jury to consider the reasonable doubt standard.

Why This Trial Matters

The YSL trial has sparked nationwide conversations about the intersection of hip-hop culture and legal accountability. Critics argue that the case unfairly targets rap artists by using their lyrics as evidence, setting a concerning precedent for free speech and creative expression.

Missing South Carolina Woman, Ta’Haley Payton, Disappears After Dispute During Birthday Trip to Charlotte

Ta’Haley Payton, a 22-year-old woman from South Carolina, has been reported missing after traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, to celebrate her birthday with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Setoby Armstrong. The couple made the trip from Greenville, S.C. to Charlotte on Nov. 19, but the celebration took a dark turn, leaving Ta’Haley’s family now searching for answers.

Setoby Armstrong, 25, the boyfriend of missing South Carolina woman Ta’Haley Payton.

The Last Known Location: Microtel Inn & Suites in Charlotte

According to Ta’Haley’s sister, Karlotta Payton, she told The North Carolina Beat that the couple checked into the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Charlotte/Northlake on Ta’Haley’s birthday, Nov. 19. During the trip, tensions escalated when Setoby allegedly accused Ta’Haley of texting other men. This argument led to the couple checking out of the hotel the next morning Nov. 20, but Setoby reportedly drove off, leaving Ta’Haley behind at the hotel.

Following Setoby leaving her, Ta’Haley walked to a nearby Circle K gas station, attempting to contact her family for help. Her phone had been broken in prior incidents with Setoby, forcing her to rely on his phone to stay in touch with loved ones.

Ta’Haley Payton, 22, from South Carolina, has been missing since November 19, 2024, after a birthday trip to Charlotte, NC, with her boyfriend, Setoby Armstrong

While at the gas station, police were called. Karlotta said police called her mom and told her that they attempted to speak with Ta’Haley, but she refused to speak with them. Medics were called to check on her, and it was at this point that Setoby mysteriously reappeared.

Karlotta explained that Setoby was on the phone with her mother at the time, and she asked him not to leave Ta’Haley alone, seeing if he would stay there with her until family could arrive or arrange Uber transportation.

“At this point when he [Armstrong] go back to the Circle K, he is on the phone with my mom and she’s telling him ‘don’t leave my baby’ and to just stay with her until we can get there or try to get a uber for her,” Lotta explained.

“He kept saying ‘I’m hurt, I’m hurt,'” Karlotta recalled the phone call her mother had with Setoby.

Ta’Haley’s Movements and Final Communication

After being evaluated by medical staff, Ta’Haley was taken to a local hospital but was later discharged around 2:30 p.m. that same afternoon. She then visited Big Ben Pub, a British sports bar on Elizabeth Avenue, where she called her mother to assure her she was okay and heading to a nearby Burger King. However, she stopped by a Crumbl Cookie shop.

Final Text Messages Spark Concern

At the Crumbl Cookie shop, Ta’Haley used an employee’s phone to text her mother, saying a close friend was on the way to pick her up. When Karlotta arrived in town, she retraced her sister’s steps, visiting every location Ta’Haley had been. At Crumbl, Karlotta spoke with the employee, who confirmed that Ta’Haley had made two phone calls—one to her mom and the other number was Setoby’s.

Later, at 3:55 p.m., Ta’Haley sent a follow-up message to her mom, confirming that her friend was on the way. However, her family suspects that Setoby may have picked her up instead.

Setoby Armstrong, 25, the boyfriend of missing South Carolina woman Ta’Haley Payton.

Karlotta expressed doubts about one of the text messages, stating that it didn’t sound like something her sister would write, raising concerns that Setoby may have been involved in her disappearance.

Ta’Haley’s Whereabouts Remain Unknown

Since that final communication, Ta’Haley has not been seen, and Setoby Armstrong has not provided any information about her whereabouts, leaving her family fearing for her safety.

Ta’Haley’s family also shared with The North Carolina Beat that, two weeks ago, she left Setoby due to his alleged ongoing threats to kill her and their child if she tried to leave. However, they claim that Setoby somehow convinced her to return, and this has now led to her disappearance.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the disappearance, and Ta’Haley’s family is urging anyone with information to come forward.

Late Tuesday night authorities were called to the 1600 block of Old Rivers Road. Stormy had been staying with her aunt since October, but by midnight, she was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the family, a preliminary autopsy revealed the cause of death to be blunt force trauma, and just two days later, Williams was arrested and charged with the murder of her young niece.

It’s still unclear exactly what led up to Williams allegedly committing this heinous act.

A Family Left in Grief

The tragic death has left Stormy’s family in shock and grief. Her grandmother, Tia Sanders, expressed her pain in a heart-wrenching statement to local reporters:

“I’m coping, but it’s hurting so bad that it’s not even words that can describe the fact that I will never get to see my granddaughter get to kindergarten,” Sanders said.

Vanity Rubystine Williams charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse in the death of her 4-year-old niece, Stormy.

Durham Faces School Bus Driver Shortage: Parents Asked to Step In One Day a Week in December

0

The ongoing school bus driver shortage in Durham County is becoming a hot mess, leaving parents scrambling to adjust their routines. Starting in December, Durham Public Schools (DPS) will require parents to take on the responsibility of driving their children to and from school one day each week.

This unprecedented change comes as the district struggles to fill driver positions, a challenge fueled by low wages, long hours, and increased competition for CDL-certified workers. While the shortage is not new, this new change is just letting parents know how severe the situation has become.

Why the Shortage?

DPS officials cite several factors contributing to the shortage:

  • Driver Retention: Many drivers have left for higher-paying positions in private sectors like delivery services and trucking.
  • Hiring Challenges: Despite recruitment efforts, the pool of candidates with the necessary qualifications remains small.
  • Pandemic Impact: The pandemic shifted workforce dynamics, leaving school transportation departments nationwide short-staffed.

Parent Pickup Plan

The district’s temporary plan require parents of students in grades K-12 to arrange transportation one day per week for December. The specific day will vary depending on the school and bus route, with parents notified through school communication channels.

Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis addressed the changes on Friday afternoon, stressing that ensuring safe and reliable transportation for all students remains a top priority for the district. He reassured the community that this plan is temporary and that efforts are ongoing to restore full bus service as quickly as possible.

How Parents Are Reacting

Please know that the parents in the Bull City are reacting but it’s mixed. Some express frustration at the additional burden on them, particularly for working families or those without reliable transportation – that depend on the bus transportation for their child.

“This puts a lot of pressure on families who already have tight schedules,” said Rebecca Miller, a Durham parent with two children in middle school. “It’s hard to believe we’ve gotten to this point.”

Others, however, are more understanding of the district’s predicament.

“We’re all in this together,” said Carlos Ramirez, a parent of a high school sophomore. “If driving one day a week helps keep the system running, I’ll do my part.”

What’s Next for DPS?

The district is struggling but trying to address the shortage, offering sign-on bonuses, increased wages, and flexible schedules to attract new drivers. DPS has also partnered with local workforce agencies to recruit CDL-certified individuals and launched training programs for those willing to obtain the required certification.

Still, the challenge remains daunting. State funding limits and competition from private companies continue to hinder efforts to fully staff routes.

Judge Sentences Lumberton Killer To Die In Prison For The Kidnapping, Rape, And Murder of 13-year-old Hania Aguilar

0

When 32-year-old Michael McLellan woke up this morning, he knew he would be returning to a cell where he will spend the rest of his life. A judge sentenced the child-killer to die behind bars, locking him away for the remainder of his natural life for the murder of a 13-year-old girl Hania Aguilar, from Lumberton, North Carolina.

13-year-old girl Hania Aguilar

Hania’s tragic story began on the morning of November 5, 2018, when she stepped outside her home at the Rosewood Mobile Home Park to start her aunt’s SUV for school. A man wearing a bandana forced his way into the vehicle, abducting Hania in front of her family. Days later, the stolen SUV was found abandoned, but it wasn’t until November 27 that Hania’s body was discovered in a nearby wooded area, bringing the agonizing search to a devastating close.

Authorities Questioned, Independent Media Scrutinized

In the days following Hania’s abduction, the FBI, Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, and other agencies assured the public they had no suspects or persons of interest. Press conferences encouraged residents to stay vigilant, lock their doors and windows, and report suspicious activity.

However, behind the scenes, information told a different story. Sources from within the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office tipped off The North Carolina Beat, revealing that Michael McLellan was already in custody on unrelated charges and had been questioned about Hania’s disappearance.

On November 28, 2018, we broke the story, identifying McLellan as the suspect. The revelation sent shockwaves across social media, drawing both support and criticism.

Unfortunately, we experienced site issues and lost the original article. However, here is a screenshot from our Facebook page from when we first broke the story.

Mainstream outlets, including WCTI 12, attempted to discredit our reporting, with FBI Public Affairs Specialist Shelley Lynch even contacting us directly, attempting to intimidate us to stay out of their investigation.

The WCTI News Channel 12 article aimed to discredit our reporting, which revealed that Michael McLellan was the suspect and already in custody.
The WCTI News Channel 12 article aimed to discredit our reporting, which revealed that Michael McLellan was the suspect and already in custody.

But just ten days later, on December 8, 2018, authorities officially charged McLellan with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense, first-degree kidnapping, abduction of a child, and concealment of a death.

That same day, thousands gathered to honor Hania as she was laid to rest, her vibrant life tragically cut short by McLellan’s sinister acts.

Justice Delivered

Six years later, in Robeson County Court Friday, McLellan pleaded guilty to all charges, accepting a life sentence without the possibility of parole. But his day in court wasn’t without chaos. On the way to the Robeson County Courthouse, McLellan attempted to escape custody using a homemade key to unlock his handcuffs. The key malfunctioned, thwarting his plan.

Michael McLellan

After his sentencing, McLellan made a second escape attempt while being transported back to Central Prison in Raleigh. According to Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins, McLellan dismantled a security device known as a “black box” and attempted to overpower a deputy, even gaining partial control of the officer’s firearm during a struggle.

The quick actions of a detention officer, who used pepper spray, forced McLellan to surrender.

Closure for a Grieving Community

With McLellan now securely behind bars, the Lumberton community hopes for healing and closure. Sheriff Wilkins reflected on the case, calling it a important reminder of the dangers officers face daily and the resilience of those seeking justice for victims like Hania Aguilar.

The sentencing marks the end of a dark chapter, but Hania’s memory lives on as a symbol of innocence lost and the pursuit of justice against unthinkable evil. Rest In God’s arm Hania.

Authorities in Johnston County has arrested and charged 18-year-olds Malik Roberts and Tayshaun Whitner, along with 19-year-old LaTraviun Parker, for allegedly ambushing an elderly 66-year-old woman and robbing her in her own driveway.

The Robbery

It all started on Friday, November 8, when the victim was shopping at the Walmart on North Brightleaf Boulevard. As she struggled to load groceries into her vehicle, a seemingly helpful young man stepped forward, offering assistance. What appeared to be an act of kindness quickly unraveled into an alleged pre-meditated robbery.

The three culprits followed the elderly woman home. As she began unloading her groceries, two more men suddenly appeared, ambushing her in her driveway. Claiming to be armed with a shotgun, they snatched her purse and fled in an unidentified vehicle. Despite her suspicions of being followed from the store, she told investigators that she never saw a car trailing her.

By Thursday afternoon, Johnston County deputies had tracked down and arrested Roberts, Whitner, and Parker. Each faces multiple felony charges, including common law robbery, conspiracy, and obtaining property by false pretense.

High-Ranking NC Gang Member Accused of Impregnating Two Jail Workers While Behind Bars

A North Carolina inmate, who claims he is the number 1 highest-ranking Blood gang member in the state, is facing new allegations in Durham County. Darrius Tyson, already accused of two murders, is now charged with impregnating two jail workers while in custody.

Serious Allegations Against Jail Employees

Prosecutors allege Tyson used his influence inside the Durham County Detention Center to engage in illegal activities, including smuggling drugs, coordinating outside drug deals, and engaging in sexual relationships with staff. Two jail employees—then-detention sergeant Jade Robertson and contracted nurse Lerin Burnette—have been charged with felony sexual conduct with an inmate.

Jade Robertson, a former Durham County detention sergeant, charged with felony sexual conduct with an inmate in connection to Darrius Tyson.
Lerin Burnette, a contracted nurse at Durham County jail, facing charges of engaging in unlawful sexual conduct with inmate Darrius Tyson.

A third employee, former detention sergeant Nicole Locke, faces felony charges for allegedly providing Tyson with a contraband cell phone.

Tyson’s attorney, Daniel Meier, paints a very different picture, arguing that his client is a victim of sexual assault by jail staff. Meier emphasized the legal point that detainees cannot consent to sexual relationships due to their incarcerated status.

“He was sexually assaulted by two employees who have now been charged with felonies,” Meier told the court. “It’s a Class E felony for someone to have sexual relations with a detainee. By law, he is a victim in these cases.”

Gang Leader or Victim?

During court proceedings, prosecutors described Tyson as a powerful and active gang leader. According to them, Tyson admitted to being the “highest-ranking Blood gang member” in North Carolina, a claim supported by the state Department of Corrections, which lists his nickname as “King Blood.”

Darrius Tyson, the self-proclaimed top Blood gang leader in North Carolina.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Tyson used an illegal cell phone to orchestrate drug transactions and other illicit activities while incarcerated. Contraband, including a vape pen and marijuana, was reportedly delivered to him in jail. He was eventually transferred to CP in Raleigh, where he remains in custody.

Ongoing Legal Troubles

Tyson is already facing serious charges related to the 2022 disappearance of Shawn Burton, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and burglary.

Burton’s body has not been found, but prosecutors continue to build their case against Tyson. These charges follow his release in 2020 after serving over a decade for a 2010 murder conviction, which was overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct and withheld evidence.

Burton was reportedly Tyson’s promoter.
