Alamance County detention officer charged for allegedly having sexual relationship with inmate in North Carolina jail

A NC detention officer arrested for sex with inmate is also accused of running a drug smuggling scheme inside the Alamance County jail, according to investigators.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) says a detention officer who was supposed to be upholding the law is now accused of breaking it in the worst way — by having sex with an inmate and smuggling drugs behind bars.

Authorities announced the arrest of Alberta Marie Hamm, a now-former detention officer at the Alamance County Detention Center, after investigators say she got caught up in a full-blown contraband and sexual misconduct scandal inside the jail.

Former officer Alberta Marie Hamm was arrested for having sex with an inmate and smuggling drugs, shaking up the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, the case exposes serious concerns about corruption, inmate safety, and abuse of power within the facility. Hamm, who was once trusted to guard inmates, now finds herself on the other side of the law.

She’s accused of engaging in sexual acts with Richard Montgomery Robertson Jr., a 36-year-old inmate who’s been locked up since 2020 on murder charges under a $500,000 bond.

Inmate Richard Montgomery Robertson Jr., charged with murder, now faces new conspiracy charges linked to a NC detention officer sex scandal.

Officials say the inappropriate relationship wasn’t the only issue — Hamm is also accused of moving drugs and contraband within the jail.

Per the official Alamance County Sheriff’s Office media release, Hamm faces several felony charges, including:

  • Felony Sex Act – Government Institution Employee (for having sexual contact with an inmate)

  • Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance on Jail Premises

  • Felony Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Distribute Schedule III Controlled Substance

  • Felony Conspiracy to Sell and Deliver Controlled Substance (Schedule III)

  • Felony Providing Contraband to an Inmate

Her alleged partner, Robertson, is also facing a felony conspiracy charge for his role in the alleged drug plot.

Bond for Hamm was set at $200,000 secured, while Robertson’s bond was set at $50,000 secured.

The investigation reportedly began in September 2024, when detention center officials became suspicious of narcotics circulating inside the jail.

After weeks of digging, detectives say they traced the contraband back to Hamm. A search warrant was executed on October 29, 2025, at her residence, which led to her arrest — and Robertson’s arrest the same day.

SHERIFF TERRY JOHNSON SPEAKS OUT

In a strong statement, Sheriff Terry Johnson made it clear that corruption within his office won’t be tolerated:

“I will not tolerate this type of criminal activity or behavior within the ranks of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office. We will clean our own ‘house’ swiftly and bring charges when necessary.”

The department says the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as more evidence is reviewed.
