SBI Says Toxicology Revealed Fatal Medication Mix in Death of 20-Month-Old Kemari Morgan
PERSON COUNTY, N.C. – North Carolina state investigators announced a major indictment in the tragic death of a toddler who died while under the watch of social services.
According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, a Person County Grand Jury handed down a true bill of indictment on Monday against Latisha Linzsey, officially charging her in the death of 20-month-old Kemari Morgan.
The SBI confirmed Linzsey was immediately taken into custody following the indictment and is now facing a second-degree murder charge. She’s currently being held under a $300,000 secured bond.
WHAT INVESTIGATORS SAY HAPPENED
Authorities say Kemari was found unresponsive in his crib on May 24 while in the care of Person County Social Services. Despite emergency efforts, the toddler could not be revived.

Toxicology results later revealed devastating details.
According to the SBI, tests showed Kemari died after receiving a fatal dosage of multiple medications, a discovery that ultimately pushed investigators to take the case before a grand jury.
SBI STEPS IN
In November, the Person County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the SBI as the investigation intensified. After weeks of review, agents consulted with the district attorney’s office and moved forward with presenting the case to the grand jury — leading to Monday’s indictment.
CUSTODY BATTLE BEFORE THE DEATH
Officials previously confirmed that Kemari and his five siblings had been removed from their biological mother, Briauna Morgan, by Child Protective Services earlier this year due to multiple allegations.

Briauna Morgan has strongly denied the accusations and fought to regain custody of her children. However, during a June court hearing, her efforts were denied.
