CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A North Carolina police officer is dead following a shooting on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and authorities are tight-lipped as rumors swirl across social media.
What We Know About the Jacksonville Police Officer Killed on Campe Lejeune
According to a press release from the Jacksonville Police Department, the department was notified on Tuesday, January 13, around 12:40 p.m. by the Camp Lejeune Provost Marshal’s Office about a serious incident involving an off-duty JPD officer on base.
The officer has been identified as Philip Chiorino.
JPD confirmed that Officer Chiorino sustained life-threatening injuries during the incident and was later pronounced deceased. No additional details surrounding the shooting have been released at this time.
Chiorino was reportedly killed by security officers.
Because the incident occurred on a military installation, the case has been turned over to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), which is now leading the investigation.
The shooting reportedly happened near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School, raising serious concerns and questions among military families.
While officials have not released what led up to the shooting, speculation and rumors have been rapidly spreading online.
Public records show that Officer Chiorino lived in the Tarawa Terrace community, and his wife is an active-duty U.S. Marine.
As of now, Camp Lejeune and NCIS have not yet released more information about the deadly shooting.
