HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A Hillsborough man accused of brutally killing his own housekeeper stood before a judge Friday afternoon — and was denied bond.
According to court records, 53-year-old Matthew Jared Vukmer is now facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of 54-year-old Paula Floyd, a woman who had reportedly worked for his family for years.
Authorities say Floyd was stabbed to death inside Vukmer’s Hillsborough home on March 6 — a place she had routinely visited every other Friday for work.
Investigators say the attack may have been completely random.
“UNPROVOKED ATTACK” LEAVES FAMILY IN SHOCK
Prosecutors described the killing as an “unprovoked attack,” leaving Floyd’s loved ones searching for answers that may never come.
“It’s one of the things we may never know,” Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said. “This may be an irrational moment that can’t be rationally explained.”
Floyd wasn’t a stranger — she was someone the family trusted. She had been working as the household’s cleaner for years, making the alleged violence even more disturbing for the family.
WIFE CALLED 911
Officials confirmed that Vukmer’s wife called 911 during the incident, as the situation inside the home spiraled out of control.
By the time deputies arrived, Floyd had been fatally stabbed.
Hours after the deadly incident, authorities tracked Vukmer down in Grayson County, Virginia, where he was taken into custody.
He remained locked up in Virginia for nearly a month before finally waiving extradition earlier this week, clearing the way for his return to North Carolina.
