Fayetteville police searching for vehicle connected to drive-by shooting that killed a 7-year-old boy

Fayetteville police are making some progress in their investigation into the shooting death of 7-year-old Zion Gibbs, who was shot in a drive-by shooting in June and later died. The department is now seeking information about a vehicle they believe is linked to the shooting.

At the time of the shooting and his death, Zion was a student at Benjamin Martin Elementary School. He died on June 10, just three days after bullets struck his home on the 800 block of Danish Drive, as reported by the Fayetteville Police Department.

Nearly two months after the shooting, FPD have released images and video of a four-door grey or dark grey Chrysler 200 that is thought to be connected to the shooting. FPD also said the car has a white sticker on the rear driver’s side window, 30-day temporary paper tags, and some minor damage on the driver’s side between the front and rear doors.

According to Zion’s aunt, who set up a GoFundMe after the tragedy, Zion was playing video games on the couch when the shooting occurred, and one of the bullets struck him under his left eye. He was declared brain dead.

Lindsay Whitley, a spokesperson for Cumberland County Schools, confirmed that Zion had just finished the first grade.
