Durham Police Say No Charges Will Be Filed After Beloved Wilson Teacher Brijette Basden Was Struck and Killed on I-40
DURHAM, N.C. — Durham Police say the driver who hit and killed a young Wilson teacher on I-40 won’t be facing charges.
The community is still in shock over the death of 24-year-old Brijette Basden, a kindergarten teacher at Sallie B. Howard School. She was known for her bright smile, her love for kids, and her drive to make a difference.
Before stepping into the classroom, Basden was a standout athlete at Shaw University — smart, focused, and fearless. Friends say she was “that girl” — always helping, always showing love, always chasing her dreams.
Now her students are left with memories, and a school is left mourning one of its own.
Just before sunrise Sunday, October 19, 2025, around 4:45 a.m., Brijette and her sister Asrael Basden pulled their Ford Fusion to the left shoulder of I-40 near Page Road to switch drivers. Investigators say the car was partially in the lane — and that’s when tragedy hit.

A Toyota Camry came down the left lane and smashed into the stopped Fusion. Brijette, who was outside the car, was struck and killed on impact. Her sister was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was shut down for hours as Durham Police reconstructed the scene and tried to piece together what happened.
