Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews faces mounting backlash over a Facebook post about Charlie Kirk’s death, as critics call for her resignation and supporters defend her First Amendment rights.

Durham’s Police Chief Patrice Andrews is facing criticism — and some calls for resignation — after posting a personal comment on Facebook regarding the public response to the death of Charlie Kirk, a well-known far-right conservative activist.

The post, which expressed confusion about “people mourningKirk, has drawn sharp reactions from conservative outlets and critics. But many others say the post is being taken out of context and argue that Chief Andrews has a constitutional right to voice personal opinions — especially when done on a private social media account.

A personal Facebook post by Chief Patrice Andrews questioning public mourning for Charlie Kirk has sparked controversy.

On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. His death sparked national headlines and an outpouring of tributes from supporters. Shortly after, Chief Andrews made a Facebook post on her personal page, where she expressed that she was “confused by the people mourning the death of Charlie Kirk.” Critics accused her of being insensitive or politicizing a tragedy, while others argued her comment was made as a private citizen, not in her official role.

Some conservative voices and local critics are demanding Chief Andrews step down, saying the post shows bias and is unbecoming of someone in a law enforcement leadership position. However, supporters of Chief Andrews — and even some neutral observers — have pushed back, noting that the post was made on a personal account, not on the Durham Police Department’s official channels.  The post, while controversial to some, falls under First Amendment protections.

  1. So she doesn’t have to honor an asshole? People, including her- ESPECIALLY AS POLICE CHIEF- should TIRELESSLY seek out the truth. Anyone with an opinion of Charlie Kirk has either heard him speak THROUGH AN ENTIRE INTERVIEW OR SPEECH- NOT SNIPPETS/ SOUND BITES. Or, has heard someone ELSE describe their interpretation. Anyone with her perception and vile accusations of Mr Kirk has NEVER heard an entire interview of his. He proves himself NOT to ba ANY of the things she accuses him of and convicts him of. Everything she said is a PROVABLE LIE. Just watch his videos all the way through. You will see a beautiful rightous, couragous soul. She is showing the rot in her heart and spirit by condemning him using second hand information to convict him. That is TOTALLY AGAINST ALL THAT IS JUSTICE. Privately or publicly spoken, she has disqualified herself as being competent, or having the mindset, to be any part of any police department. She must resign or be removed. She clearly has not done her due diligence- her basic information gathering REQUIRED FOR EVERY LEGAL CASE, but has been grossly, inhumanity swayed to condemn his assassination.

    1. Sorry but I get sick of ethnic people using race to defend their comments and attitudes. If we white people say anything about race we are racist, fascists, far right. Stop hiding behind your skin colour to excuse racist behaviour. When you hold public office you don’t have private accounts so whatever you say is said in your official public role. You were identified in that role. Charlie Kirk died at the hands of a 22 year old gunman and deserves better than being called Racist by Senior Police Officer.

  2. One must question how vigorously she will pursue justice for murder victims in here Durham County, regardless of race, religion, or whether if she likes them or not. She makes me feel less safe.

    1. Me too. The mayor, the chief of police, the city council- all of them standing by her multiple, hateful, baseless comments. Everything she accuses him of is easily disproven simply by watching the videos in their entirety. But all these hateful, racist cowards would rather be mad for no reason than to seek peace SIMPLY BY WATCHING HIS STATEMENTS IN THEIR ENTIRETY. This is Jim Crowe bs, in reverse. You hated it when it was done to your forfathers, but now it’s fine for you to do it on steroids. Good job

    2. I completely agree! Since I am a white Christian woman who saw Charlie Kirk as a brother in the Lord and mourned his violent and abhorrent murder and grieve over the loss of this man for his children and young wife, maybe the Police Chief won’t be bothered to protect me as I leave my building late at night in downtown Durham. People are up in arms about her right to spew her hate and lies, but no one is giving him the same right. Does that mean if someone shoots her in cold blood because they don’t like what she says, we should cry out against those who would mourn her loss? I would be sad for her family and upset that she was killed. But apparently freedom and decency only goes one way.

  3. We should not be sad for a man that constantly said “there will be some deaths”. Nothing is more important than our right to bear arms. All black hires are DEI, no experience.
Irony is my favorite part he loved to say Floyd’s death was from a drug overdose, not the knee on the neck. Well Kirk’s death was from blood spewing out his neck, not a gun shot. It gushed like someone struck oil. And it was a conservative white man just like him🤣

Thank You Chief Andrews for your freedom of speech

    1. You are sick. You purposely, or out of ignorance, take what he said out of context. Evil. You lie again- he said people should not be hired because of their skin color. You used to agree with that. But you are too young to remember that. Evil. It goes on and on, you’re sick. Are you one of the black people that democrats constantly say are too dumb or whatever to be able to get an id? Why don’t you correct them on that point? I guess it’s because you agree with them. Modern day slave holders. Wake up.

  4. What’s her excuse for looney tunes brown for stabbing Iryna Zarutska, don’t say he has mental issues he’s been let out of jail 14 times no bond.

  5. The left wing have become the very fascist they claim to be against. Look up the meaning of the word fascist in the dictionary and liberals meat all the criteria. Hitler silenced and killed people who’s opinions he didn’t like too and the Nazis rationalized it as okay, just as the liberals are doing now. They’re all murderous scum. Antifa was another example. Burning down our inner cities and enforcing their beliefs through intimidation and violence. Typical clueless libs.

    1. People have a right to express how they feel. I’m sorry if you are offended that she didn’t like Kirk. People are entitled to like who they like. I didn’t hear her celebrate his death. Kirk said many hateful, discriminative things especially towards African Americans. I don’t honor people, who speak hate, but I can still feel bad he was murdered. This is getting ridiculous demanding people lose their jobs for Freedom of Speech. How about let’s make this fair and start firing people on the Right, who expressed on social media their dislike for someone starting with Trump? Trump has said far worse!!!

  7. There is nothing wrong with her statement. She showed empathy, something he wasn’t a fan of people having. She just pointed out that much of what he said was decisive. I’m confused how speaking actual facts about someone is disrespectful. The life the man lived is speaking even in his death.

People just don’t want to call it for what it is. You can say freedom of speech on one hand and snatch it back when it doesn’t suit your narrative.

  8. We should be enraged when any human being is assassinated. He was a father, husband, son and mentor to many. Do better people. Try to be kind.

    1. The man stated out of his own mouth empathy and sympathy are made up and he didn’t believe in either so what’s the big deal. The chief did no more than what the dead man did cast her opinion. He said whatever he chose about whomever he chose now others are exercising that same right. The sad part in this is he died in the manner in which he thought and said others should die. Quick and publicly. His words came back to bite him in the neck ya think. I see him screaming he doesn’t want people’s empathy and sympathy because their made up

    2. My son was assassinated on camera November 24, 2023 and nobody cared because he was a black man the police department in Hendersonville, North Carolina immediately after showing me the video to identify the shooter changed the narrative heartless, wicked evil human beings. They have done everything they can to keep from the story getting out!! But because of who they are, and because of who I am, I’m supposed to be quiet and except these barbaric act of hate because no one will listen just because you take our tongue doesn’t make it any less true!!!! Justice for Elijah E Timmons!!!!

    1. ON BEHALF OF ALL PPL OF COLOR PLEASE GO FORTH AND 🍽️💩 AND ⚰️U 🤡🖕🏾AND MAY YOUR EVIL SOUL REST IN 😈🔥🔥

  9. Why is she under fire when he basically degraded cats all the time and she has freedom of speech just like he did . Oh I forgot she black and he’s was white so she can’t speak het opinion. This will never change unless we as black people stand up for each other and not the enemy who wants us back in slavery.
