According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a disturbance at McCoy’s home on the morning of the incident. McCoy told deputies that her son had refused to give her the keys to a vehicle registered to her boyfriend and would not allow her to leave the house.

Deputies intervened and instructed Glenn Jr. not to drive the vehicle due to his expired driver’s license. Court records state that Glenn Jr. became upset and eventually left the home on foot. Hours later, deputies returned to the residence after a second 911 call—this time, McCoy was found dead with a deep puncture wound to the left side of her neck. The vehicle was no longer in the driveway.
