Day 5 of the legendary Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament turned into a high-seas emergency Friday when the 47-foot charter boat “Raptor” burst into flames roughly 50 miles off the coast of Morehead City, NC.
The boat, based out of North Myrtle Beach, SC, had just hit the water for another day of intense competition before disaster struck.

WHAT HAPPENED AT BIG ROCK BLUE MARLIN TOURNAMENT
Crew members aboard the Raptor first noticed grey smoke creeping up from below deck. But within minutes, thick black smoke overtook the sky—and flames engulfed the vessel.
Thanks to fast-thinking anglers aboard the Cost Plus who was not part of the tournament, all five crew members on the Raptor were safely rescued. No one was injured, and they were transported back to shore in Morehead City.
The U.S. Coast Guard, along with the Marine Safety Detachment at Fort Macon, responded and have launched an investigation into what sparked the blaze. Officials are probing potential fuel leaks, mechanical issues, or electrical failures.
The fishing community is hailing the Cost Plus crew as heroes for their quick response. Peters and his team acted without hesitation.
TOURNAMENT STILL HEATING UP
Even as the Raptor drifted and burned at sea, the Big Rock Tournament pressed on. With 269 boats still in the chase for big prizes and bragging rights.
