Multi-Agency Response to Bertie-Martin Regional Jail Hostage Situation
Pure mayhem happened early Monday morning at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center when inmates took over, overpowering staff and seizing control of parts of the jail.
According to an official NC SBI update, the takeover happened around 5:00 a.m. Inmates violently assaulted on-duty guards and took over sections of the building. At the time, 88 inmates and just 3 guards were inside.
One guard made a daring escape shortly after the takeover began, but the other two guards were taken hostage.
Negotiations Lead to Releases After Bertie-Martin Regional Jail Hostage Situation
After hours of negotiations, around 9:30 a.m. — both hostage guards were safely released along with 18 inmates. The officers walked out unharmed.
Just 20 minutes later, at 9:50 a.m., another large group of inmates was freed and exited the facility.
Law enforcement is still working to regain full control of the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail as negotiations continue.
Sheriff Speaks Out
“Our top priority is the safety of our staff, inmates, and the surrounding community,” said Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin. “We are coordinating closely with multiple law enforcement partners to resolve this situation safely and as quickly as possible.”
A huge swarm of agencies responded on the scene, including Bertie and Martin County Sheriff’s Offices, NC SBI, FBI, NC ALE, State Highway Patrol, Department of Adult Correction, and sheriff’s offices from Hertford, Chowan, Beaufort, Granville, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Greene, and Lenoir counties, plus local police from Edenton, Windsor, and Williamston.
Authorities have locked down the area around County Farm Road with a heavy perimeter.
Officials stress there is no threat to the general public.

I would put money on it them inmates were treated like animals this is 100% the prison problem
