Authorities say William Craig Durham, 56, also of Roaring River, restrained the mom, removed her without consent, and shot her to death. Reynolds was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was approximately 4:15 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026, when Wilkes County emergency dispatchers received a 911 call about a man shooting a woman inside a vehicle at 304 Monteith Acres Road in the Hays community — a short, rural dead-end road lined with homes off Yellow Banks Road.

Deputies and first responders rushed to the scene, while an AirCare helicopter was dispatched before being canceled. Reynolds was still in her USPS vehicle and on her official mail route, when she was found dead after being shot multiple times.

Initial witness accounts described a white male in a gray Nissan Altima who fired at least one round and threatened the Brandi with a firearm. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Who Was Brandi Byrd Reynolds? A Devoted Mom and Hardworking Postal Hero

Brandi Byrd Reynolds was more than a mail carrier — she was a pillar of her family and community. The 35-year-old Roaring River resident was a loving mother to two young daughters: Bayla Faith Reynolds and Adalyn Hope (Addy) Reynolds.

In a  February Facebook post that has since gone viral in local circles, Brandi wrote:

“The reason I get up every morning. Love these babies. They are what makes life worth living.”

Brandi had already endured immense loss. Her husband, Brent Andrew Reynolds, passed away in late 2025 at age 35, leaving her to raise their two daughters as a single mother while working a demanding job delivering mail in rural Wilkes County.

Friends and family described her as resilient, dedicated, and someone who showed up every day for her babies and her community.

Following an investigation, Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested William Craig Durham, 56, of 981 Boss Blackburn Road in Roaring River. He faces charges of First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Kidnapping.

The investigation is still very active.
