Michelle Kenan Shot & Killed Inside Durham Home After Years Fighting Gun Violence
A Durham community is mourning after a beloved anti-gun violence advocate was tragically shot and killed inside her own home — the very type of violence she spent years fighting to stop.
Michelle Kenan, a 51-year-old mother, mentor, and outspoken community activist, was fatally shot early Monday morning inside her apartment at the Rochelle Manor complex in Durham, North Carolina.
According to the Durham Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting around 1:53 a.m. on May 18, 2026, in the 2800 block of Rochelle Street. When police arrived, they found Kenan suffering from a gunshot wound inside the residence.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly did not survive.
As of Friday, no arrests have been announced, and investigators say the case remains active.
The heartbreaking killing has sent chills throughout Durham because Kenan wasn’t just another resident — she was somebody who dedicated her life to trying to save the community from the exact type of violence that ultimately took her life.
Kenan was widely known throughout Durham for her work with the 5K Foundation Inc., a grassroots nonprofit focused on keeping children away from gangs, street violence, and gun crime.
Family members say she played a major role in building the organization’s “Play Games, Not Guns” initiative — a community program aimed at giving youth positive outlets through sports, mentoring, football leagues, and recreational activities instead of violence.
The program reportedly reached hundreds of kids throughout Durham neighborhoods, especially communities heavily impacted by shootings and gang activity.
Loved ones described Kenan as a “community ambassador” who stayed deeply involved in organizing outreach events and supporting families affected by violence.
In a heartbreaking statement, the 5K Foundation said they were devastated by her death.
“5K Foundation, Inc. is heartbroken by the senseless killing of our beloved family member, community ambassador, and supporter, Michelle Kenan,” the organization shared. “She stood beside us in our mission to organize, promote, and support programs designed to fight against gang and gun violence in communities like Rochelle Manor and throughout Durham.”
Friends and neighbors say Kenan was known for always encouraging young people to stay focused, avoid trouble, and make better choices.
DURHAM VIOLENCE CONTINUES TO SPARK CONCERN
Kenan’s death comes as city leaders continue scrambling for solutions to Durham’s ongoing violence problem.
Leo Williams recently discussed plans for a citywide violence reduction summit focused on prevention strategies, youth intervention, and community safety efforts.
Now, many residents say Kenan’s murder highlights just how serious the crisis has become.
Police have not publicly identified a suspect or released details about what may have led to the deadly shooting.
