Wake Forest Fake Bail Bonds Scam Leaves Raleigh Duo Facing Felony Charges

RALEIGH, N.C.  – Two Raleigh residents are facing serious felony heat after police say they played dress-up as a bail bondsman and ran off with a victim’s money.

According to arrest warrants, Defonte Duborris Douglas, 28, and Jacquala Antonnette Bennett, 36, are both charged with Obtaining Property by False Pretense and Felony Conspiracy after investigators say the pair staged an elaborate hustle to trick a woman out of her cash.

Police say the alleged setup went down on October 2, 2025, when the victim believed she was paying legitimate bond money to help a loved one get out of jail. Instead, investigators allege she was walking straight into a scam.

Court documents state the duo “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously” worked together to cheat and defraud the victim by making false claims and promises — including a bogus assurance that Douglas would bond out the victim’s spouse.

Authorities say Douglas posed as the actual bail bondsman while Bennett allegedly worked behind the scenes in the plot.

As of now, Douglas is being held on a $4,000 secured bond, while Bennett’s bond is set at $1,000.
