A 9-year-old child from Halifax County, North Carolina, brought hope and smiles to many when he courageously dialed 911 after his mother was discovered shot inside her car on Wednesday night.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office promptly responded to the distress call around 9 pm that evening at Branch Avenue and Key Street near Roanoke Rapids.
Upon reaching the scene, officers found 43-year-old Beth Walker in her vehicle, which was parked in a field, suffering from a gunshot wound. Her young son was by her side and made the emergency call for assistance.
Walker was swiftly taken to ECU Medical Center in Greenville, where she remains in critical condition. The 9-year-old is now under the care of his grandmother.
Motive of shooting is unknown
Walker’s parents shared with the local media that they were unaware of the circumstances that led to their daughter being shot.
Melinda Walker, Beth’s mother, mentioned that Beth was on her way home when the incident occurred, resulting in a gunshot wound to her torso.
“She was coming to my house,” Melinda Walker said. “They said if she makes it the whole left side of her body would be paralyzed.”
Melinda shared that her grandson followed the important lesson his mother and school had taught him – to dial 911 in case of an emergency.
“She wouldn’t be here today … he might not be either … if he wouldn’t have dialed 911 to get help there,” Melinda said.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has not released many specifics regarding the shooting incident.
