A student from Whiteville High School in Whiteville, North Carolina, tragically lost his life in a fatal accident, while three others, including his twin brother, sustained serious injuries.
The incident occurred on Sunset Terrace just west of Whiteville near Legion Stadium shortly after school was dismissed for the year, following an early dismissal due to a water outage in the city.
The deceased student has been identified as Kaiden Powell, with his twin brother Kainen Powell currently in critical condition. Family members told local reporters that the car the four teens were in ‘careened into a ditch and flipped several times until it landed a few hundred feet away.’
Another student, Josh Lacewell, was airlifted to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington for treatment, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
Kamari Smith is also receiving treatment for his injuries in the hospital.
During the 2024 graduation ceremony at Whiteville High School, a moment of silence was observed in memory of the four students involved in the accident.
Superintendent Jonathan Williams expressed that the ceremony was a mix of emotions, as all the students were part of the Whiteville High School community.
The crash is still under investigation.
