Wake County teacher Daveon Dunn dies by suicide, leaving a community in grief.

A Wake County community is devastated after learning that 23-year-old Daveon Dunn, a respected middle school P.E. teacher and former college basketball player, tragically died by suicide earlier this week.

WHO WAS DAVEON DUNN?

Daveon Dunn was more than just a coach. He was a motivator, role model, and mentor to many youth in Raleigh. A 6’2” standout guard at Saint Augustine’s University during the 2021–22 basketball season, Dunn had dreams beyond the court—dreams rooted in guiding the next generation.

  1. Being a survivor of a brother’s suicide, my message to his family is to seek counseling to help with his passing. This is a very personal death that you should know that you are generally not clairvoyant and could not know he would do this. Don’t blame yourself. Love and always remember him.

  2. Never met this gentleman just came across this news and I think it’s just abhorrent and very sad to hear. I’m sure his family feels devastated because sometime people don’t really tell you what’s wrong with them and they don’t feel loved like they need or they think they should even though people love them so let’s just keep the family in prayer as I say I’m keeping them in prayer and I hope the Lord continues to bless them and keep them safe.

  3. I happen to meet him last year in Jacksonville, NC where there was a 3v3 basketball event. His team and mine happen to meet in the finals and I ended up winning. We kept in touch after the event here and there but me just finding this proves to just check on your love ones.

  4. Wow. Check on your love ones and protect your mental health. Sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and students.
