On Sunday, President Donald Trump announced a bold plan to reopen Alcatraz, the notorious island prison in San Francisco Bay. The move, shared on his Truth Social platform, marks the latest effort in Trump’s ongoing “law and order” agenda. The “Trump reopen Alcatraz” proposal includes not only restoring the historic facility but expanding it into a new high-security penitentiary for what he described as “America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, commonly referred to as “The Rock,” operated from 1934 until its closure in 1963. It famously housed infamous criminals like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly before closing due to rising costs and crumbling infrastructure. Since then, the site has been under the management of the National Park Service, attracting more than one million tourists annually.
In his post, Trump said he will direct the Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ” as a symbol of “Law, Order, and JUSTICE.” The Trump reopen Alcatraz initiative is expected to be a cornerstone of his potential 2024 platform.
Despite the controversy, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed that it has received the directive and is evaluating the feasibility of the Trump reopen Alcatraz project. No formal plans, cost estimates, or timelines have been made public yet.
