A trans woman was tragically shot and killed Friday morning at, WoodSpring Suites, a low-budget motel in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).
On Friday, officers with CMPD responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon with injury at around 9:21 a.m. in the 1600 block of Deboer Avenue.
Upon arrival, they found 37-year-old Tiara Love Tori Jackson, a member of Charlotte’s LGBTQ+ community, dead at the scene.
Suspect in Custody After Second Shooting Scene
As CMPD’s Homicide Unit took over the investigation, officers quickly identified a suspect — 33-year-old Darris Dee Marshall. Just after Jackson’s body was found, Westover Division officers were called to a separate shooting where Marshall was located with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
He was taken to a local hospital, treated, and then interviewed by detectives at CMPD’s Law Enforcement Center (LEC).
Based on that interview and gathered evidence, Marshall was formally charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Following his release from medical care, Marshall was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where he is currently being held without bond.
Marshall is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 29. No motive has been publicly released, and investigators have not confirmed the relationship, if any, between Jackson and Marshall.
