Sanford woman charged with attempted murder after newborn discovered alive in neighborhood trash can

A 29-year-old woman from Lee County is behind bars with a million-dollar bond after deputies discovered a horrifying scene in the Broadway area of Sanford, North Carolina.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, on September 13, deputies responded to a 911 call about a woman lying unresponsive in a front yard. When they arrived, officers not only found the woman in distress—but they also found her newborn baby stuffed inside a trash can.

Authorities say life-saving measures were performed on both the woman and the baby until EMS arrived and transported them for medical treatment. The sheriff’s office released a statement Thursday confirming the disturbing details and identifying the woman as Mishayla Elisabeth Iles, a resident of Sanford.
