According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, on September 13, deputies responded to a 911 call about a woman lying unresponsive in a front yard. When they arrived, officers not only found the woman in distress—but they also found her newborn baby stuffed inside a trash can.
Authorities say life-saving measures were performed on both the woman and the baby until EMS arrived and transported them for medical treatment. The sheriff’s office released a statement Thursday confirming the disturbing details and identifying the woman as Mishayla Elisabeth Iles, a resident of Sanford.
After being medically cleared, Iles was formally arrested on Wednesday and charged with attempted first-degree murder and concealment of birth of a child, according to court documents.Â
She is currently being held at the Lee County Jail under a $1,000,000 secured bond.
Officials have not yet disclosed the current condition of the newborn baby, but the investigation is ongoing.
