What started as a quiet Sunday evening on Ross Street in Mobile, Alabama, turned into a devastating tragedy when police say a domestic dispute ended with a mother and son dead—and another brother forced to defend his life.
What Happened
Just after 5:39 p.m. on June 8, Mobile Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of gunshots in the 1200 block of Ross Street. When officers entered the home, they discovered two people fatally shot.
The deceased were identified as 52-year-old Traci McDuffie and her 25-year-old son, Brandon McDuffie.

What Police Say Happened
According to investigators, Brandon shot and killed his mother Traci inside the family home for reasons still under investigation.
Moments later, Traci’s older son, Brent McDuffie, walked in and witnessed the horrifying aftermath. That’s when things escalated even further.

Brandon reportedly pointed the gun at his brother. The older brother pulled a weapon and fired back—killing Brandon at the scene. The Mobile Police Department described Traci’s death as a “murder abated by the death of Brandon McDuffie”, meaning charges won’t move forward for her killing due to the shooter’s death.

However, the older brother’s actions are being reviewed by a grand jury to determine if the shooting of Brandon was legally justified under Alabama’s self-defense laws.
A Community Left in Pieces
Neighbors say the McDuffie family had lived on Ross Street for years, and no one saw this coming.
