RACING LEGEND ROBBIE BREWER DIES AFTER ON-TRACK MEDICAL EMERGENCY

The Bowman Gray Stadium racing family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Robbie Brewer, a 53-year-old short-track racing icon who passed away Saturday night after a heart attack during competition.

According to track officials, Brewer was competing in the Sportsman Division when he suffered a medical emergency during a restart with just four laps to go. His No. 17 car veered into the outside wall at the exit of Turns 3 and 4 before slamming nearly head-on into the front-straight wall.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE COULDN’T SAVE HIM

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, cutting open the roof of Brewer’s car to pull him out. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his family confirmed his passing Sunday morning.

A CHAMPION ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Brewer had been a Bowman Gray staple since his 1990 debut in the Stadium Stock division. Over his 35-year career, he made 311 starts, with 259 in Sportsman, 24 in Modified, and 28 in Stadium Stock.

He scored 11 Sportsman wins, a 2011 division championship, and multiple Modified racing victories, including back-to-back 602 Modified tour championships in 2018 and 2019. In 2016, he also won the 602 Super Limited Series title.

  • William Justice – 1950 (fire during heat race)

  • Billy Myers – 1958 (heart attack during Modified race)

  • Bubba Beck – 2002 (heart attack during competition)
