Rayshawn Deon Taylor sentenced to 37 months in federal prison after admitting he sexually assaulted a man during a welfare check while on duty as a Durham police corporal in 2024.
DURHAM, N.C. – A former Durham police corporal who once wore the badge to “protect and serve” is now in federal prison.
Rayshawn Deon Taylor, 36, a former officer with the Durham Police Department, was sentenced to 37 months behind bars last month followed by two years of supervised release after admitting he sexually assaulted a man while on duty during a welfare check.
Taylor previously pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law involving sexual misconduct. In plain terms, prosecutors say he used his authority as a police officer to violate someone’s civil rights.

According to court documents, the assault happened on August 21, 2024, when Taylor was working as a corporal with the Durham Police Department. He responded to conduct a welfare check at a man’s residence — but instead of offering help, prosecutors say he sexually assaulted the victim inside his own home.
Authorities revealed that Taylor communicated with the victim using a translation app on his personal cell phone during the encounter. Investigators later discovered he deleted the translation application and its cache data after the incident.
Prosecutors also say Taylor failed to activate his body-worn camera — a direct violation of Durham Police Department policy. However, portions of the encounter were reportedly captured by the dashboard camera in his patrol vehicle.
Court filings state that Taylor threatened to arrest the victim if he spoke out about what happened. Despite that alleged intimidation, the victim eventually came forward.
Taylor had served with the Durham Police Department for about a decade before his downfall.

This police officer has been assaulting others all the time. HE didn’t just start this kind of behavior. He just hadn’t been reported and gotten caught B4. Its ASHAME we can’t trust those who suppose to serve and protect. Instead they abuse their authority. How can the community work with the police if they cant be trust. May our Heavenly Father keep and protect us from all hurt harm and danger bc we have no one else to cover us.
