According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers were called around 8:14 p.m. to the 6000 block of Lake Hills Drive after reports of an unresponsive child. When they arrived, officers discovered 22-month-old twins who were not breathing. Both children were given Narcan — a life-saving drug used to reverse opioid overdoses — before being rushed to the hospital.
Officials said the babies are expected to survive, but warrants reveal the toddlers were exposed to one of the deadliest drugs in the country.
Police developed probable cause to search the apartment, and what they found was even more disturbing — drugs, drug paraphernalia, and even a firearm were located inside.
Authorities arrested 25-year-old Vinus Humphreys, the twins’ mother, on Tuesday. Her boyfriend, 28-year-old Tyrone Bannerman, was taken into custody that same night.
Both are charged with two counts of felony child abuse. But Bannerman faces even heavier charges — including trafficking opium/heroin, manufacturing a Schedule II controlled substance, and marijuana possession.
Court records show this isn’t the first time Bannerman has been in trouble with the law. He’s also facing charges from May for assault on a female, strangulation, and false imprisonment.
Humphrey’s is in jail on a $100,000 bond and Bannerman is in jail on a $1,500,000.00.
