A 18-year-old from Minnesota has been charged with ‘swatting’ in North Carolina. Authorities claim that he swatted his ex-girlfriend after their internet relationship didn’t work out.
According to Sheriff Ronnie Fields of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, on October 16, 2023, deputies responded to reports of multiple people being shot at a residence in Vass, North Carolina.
Vass is a small town just 60 miles south of Raleigh.
Upon arrival, deputies were able to evaluate the circumstances and determined that a shooting had not occurred, according to a press release.
A preliminary investigation led authorities to track down an 18-year-old teenager named Austin Dow in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Investigators said Dow made false reports as revenge for a failed internet relationship with a woman in the area.
He had allegedly demanded money from the woman by threatening to call the police on her.
He was charged with one count of felony extortion, one count of felony conspiracy, one count of misdemeanor conspiracy, filing a false police report, and interfering with emergency communications.
Dow was released into the custody of his parents and had his initial court appearance in Moore County District Court on Wednesday, December 6, 2023.
