A fisherman found a 19-year-old man from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, dead with gunshot wounds at the Gaston Boat Landing in Northampton County on Saturday morning around 7:17 a.m., according to law enforcement officials.
The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Sherrod Person.
In a group text message thread obtained by The North Carolina Beat, Sherrod told his two friends on Friday morning that if he died that night, “y’all boys stay up for me.” One of the friends responded back and asked Sherrod, what did he mean.
Sherrod replied to his friends, informing them that his ex-girlfriend, “Sweets,” wanted to meet him at 10 p.m. at the lake. One of his friends told him that it sounded like a “set-up,” and Sherrod agreed by saying “exactly.” Another friend told him, “Don’t go.”
In a response, Sherrod shared a screenshot of “Sweets” asking him if he wanted to meet up at the lake near Northampton. He replied back to her saying he felt like she was trying to kill him.
“Feel like your a*s trying to kill me fr…but yeah we can,” Sherrod Person responded back to “Sweets” text message.
Sweets responded to Sherrod, reminding him that the lake was their spot.
The North Carolina Beat has identified Sherrod’s ex-girlfriend, known as “Sweets,” as Ziamiraklee Harvey.
This case has been determined to be a homicide. Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, will be assisting the Gaston Police Department with this investigation.
