North Carolina House Republicans have introduced House Bill 171, titled “Equality in State Agencies/Prohibition on DEI,” aiming to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs across state agencies and local governments. The bill seeks to prohibit funding, implementation, and promotion of DEI initiatives, including their role in hiring and training processes.
The bill is sponsored by Representatives Brenden Jones (R-Columbus), Neal Jackson (R-Moore), Jarrod Lowery (R-Robeson), and Blair Eddins (R-Wilkes).

Rep. Jones emphasized the legislation’s goal to dismantle DEI initiatives in government operations, arguing that they prioritize ideology over merit-based qualifications.
“These programs have injected politics into hiring, promotions, and contracting, prioritizing ideology over qualifications and competence,” Jones stated.
If enacted, House Bill 171 would:
- Ban the use of public funds for DEI programs.
- Prohibit state agencies and local governments from accepting federal funds requiring DEI compliance.
- Impose penalties for violations, including civil fines, removal from office, or potential criminal charges.
