In the early hours of December 11, 2024, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to an urgent call that turned into a case of sexual assault. At approximately 2:29 AM, deputies arrived at a residence on Armstrong Avenue in New Bern, NC, to investigate a report of a missing teenage girl.
While on the scene, deputies heard desperate yelling for help coming from further down the road. Following the sound, they found a teenage girl lying on the side of the road, and told deputies that a man had attempted to sexually assault her. Emergency Medical Services transported the juvenile to CarolinaEast Medical Center for treatment, as investigators scrambled to piece together what happened.
The investigation, led by the Criminal Investigations Bureau, revealed that the victim had reportedly been assaulted by a co-worker after leaving work. Investigators learned the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Larry Mayfield Minor Jr. of New Bern, allegedly provided the teen with alcohol before taking her to his residence, where the assault occurred.
Deputies and investigators swiftly executed a search warrant at Minor’s home. He was taken into custody without incident and now faces serious charges, including Felony Second Degree Forcible Rape.
The suspect remains in custody with no bond and appeared in Craven County Courthouse on December 12, 2024, at 9:00 AM in courtroom 4.
