Veteran NCDOT Employee Accused of Secretly Spying on Raleigh Residents with Hidden Camera
A longtime state employee with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is facing serious felony charges after North Carolina State University Police say he broke into a Raleigh home and installed a hidden camera to spy on a couple living there.
54-year-old Brian Keith Mayhew, who has worked for NCDOT for 30 years as an engineering director, was arrested after police say he unlawfully entered a private residence on Lionel Lane and placed surveillance equipment inside to watch the unsuspecting couple.
Court records show that warrants were issued for Mayhew on Monday, September 15, but he was not taken into custody until today, September 18.
NCSU police say Mayhew was not inside the house when officers arrived, but he was quickly identified as the primary suspect in the investigation. After locating him, police took him into custody and charged him with felony breaking and entering and felony secret peeping.

A spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Transportation said Mayhew is currently on investigatory leave as the department assesses the disturbing allegations.
Mayhew’s career with the state spans three decades, raising concerns about whether this incident was isolated or part of a broader pattern of abuse of trust. No other victims have been identified at this time.
Mayhew was booked on a $10,000 secured bond. He has since bonded out.
