Rocky Mount mother says man tried to pay her son $2,000 to sleep with him after giving him a job

A mother from North Carolina is speaking out after her 18-year-old son was allegedly offered $2,000 by Dennis Harvey, the manager of a Dollar General store in Rocky Mount, to sleep with him after initially hiring him for a job.

Jett Lynch told The North Carolina Beat that her son, who was on a college break, was looking for work while at home in Rocky Mount. In early July, she visited the Dollar General on Goldrock Road and learned from a friend that they could use extra help. The store manager, Harvey, came from the back of the store and spoke to Lynch to discuss her son and possibly a job.

“He came out and he was asking me questions about my son,” Lynch said. “He was asking how old he was. When I answered him, I mentioned my son’s name and his age. That’s when he said he knew my son from Rocky Mount High.”

Lynch recounted that Harvey mentioned he had refereed a game her son played in and expressed interest in hiring him. She gave Harvey her contact information, assuring him that her son would fill out an application and inform him once it was done.

Three days later, on July 10, 2024, Lynch received a text from an unknown number claiming to be a girl named “Talia,” who said she had lost her phone and was using her iPad until her new phone arrived. When Lynch inquired about Talia’s intentions, she learned that her number was saved under her son’s name, and Talia claim she was trying to figure out “who was who”.

During their text exchange, Lynch clarified that this was not her son’s phone and that he did not know anyone named Talia. Talia then asked Lynch to have her son text her, explaining that she was locked out of her Instagram account and needed his username, claiming Lynch’s number was the last one she had for him.

“For one, this person is lying because my son has his own phone and would never give a random girl my number,” said Lynch. “He trying to catfish my boy.”

Interview for Dollar General job

Lynch mentioned that it took some time for Harvey to reach out to her son after he submitted his application because he was on vacation. She said he returned from vacation on July 26, 2027, interviewed her son the next day, July 27, and offered him the job. Once home, Lynch said her son handed her a piece of paper with the same contact details as the “Talia” who had texted her.

“My son told me that when Dennis gave him that piece of paper, Dennis said that his niece had been trying to get up with my son. She told him that my son was rude and told my son that he shouldn’t be rude to his niece,” said Lynch.

With no idea who Talia was, Lynch said her son still doesn’t know her despite them communicating after Talia reached out. She mentioned that her son even asked Talia to Facetime him, but when she did, the camera was off.

“She was trying to get my son to link up and hang out,” Lynch said.

On Monday, Lynch said Harvey came to her workplace to get food a little after 9am, and while talking to him through the drive-thru, she found it hard to determine if he was a man or a woman due to his soft voice. When Harvey reached her window, she recognized him and he asked why her son wasn’t at work.

“I asked him, what time was he supposed to be there and I remembered that my son had told me that Dennis never gave him a time to be there,” Lynch said. “I told him that I would call to get him up and get him dropped off.”

Lynch asked if it was still okay for her son to go to work, to which Harvey replied it was fine. She contacted her son, and he went to work for his first day. Later that night, around 1:23 a.m., Lynch’s son sent her a series of text messages allegedly from Harvey.

The messages did not have a date, but according to Lynch, Harvey reached out to her son asking, “Wyd man,” to which her son replied he was hanging out with his girlfriend. Harvey allegedly responded with “never mind” and mentioned it was a “money move” but that it was fine. As the conversation progressed, her son indicated that if money was involved, he might be interested. Harvey allegedly replied that her son was “playing” and “on bs.”

“I been trying to put money in your pocket,” Harvey allegedly texted Lynch’s son. Her son disputed being “on bs” and attempted to get clarification on what Harvey meant. Harvey then claimed he was bored and wanted to “chill”, offering $1,000 but stated he “don’t like folks in my business at all.”

In the following messages, Lynch’s son tried to get clarity on what Harvey meant by “chill,” and Harvey allegedly sent pictures of money, asserting he had no reason to lie, that he “pays for company,” and that he didn’t trust people who run their mouth. Lynch’s son continued to seek understanding of Harvey’s intentions.

The conversation continued with Harvey allegedly telling her son that if they hung out that night, he would be paid if he kept quiet, describing it as “easy money fr.” Her son was still trying to grasp what Harvey was implying.

“Come chill vibe and get paid simple,” Harvey allegedly texted. Finally, Harvey allegedly comes clean and admits that he wanted to lay up with the 18-year-old and would “pay whatever,” suggesting Lynch’s son would return “first thing in the am.” Her son expressed he was okay with hanging out and playing games but was uncomfortable with the idea of laying up with another man.

Harvey allegedly replied that he didn’t have a game but was seemingly upset at Lynch’s son’s answers. He stated that he wanted to help her son by putting money in his pockets. Harvey continued to offer an additional $1,000, totaling $2,000, if her son agreed to sleep with him.

“Yeah ify but laying that’s a lil odd to me laying up with another man not in me Ian gay or nun like dat nun against you or anything but that’s just how I am,”Lynch’s son replied back to the alleged Harvey.
