According to authorities, police were dispatched to Smith Chapel Holiness Church in Monroe County around 5:45 p.m. on October 29 after family members discovered 73-year-old Ollie Hamilton unresponsive inside the sanctuary. When officers arrived, they found her body near the kitchen area of the church — where she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on Jadynn Hamilton, the victim’s 17-year-old grandson, after uncovering evidence connecting him to the crime.
Mississippi Teen Kills Grandmother In Church
Sheriff Kevin Crook told reporters that “the longer the investigation went, evidence started pointing in a certain direction.” Crook added that Jadynn had initially “gone for help early on after the attack,” but later confessed to killing his grandmother during questioning.
Authorities say the motive remains unclear, and Hamilton reportedly had no prior run-ins with law enforcement. Sheriff Crook described the situation as one of the most painful cases his department has handled:
“This is a tragedy of the worst kind because you’ve got a beloved church member, family member, and community member killed—and you come to find out within 24 hours she was killed by another beloved family member,” Crook said.
The shocking murder has left the community devastated. Friends and fellow church members described Ollie Hamilton as a kind, faithful woman whose presence was felt every Sunday.
