Michael Puckett Captured in Surry County Arrested After Deputy Logan Utt Shot and Killed During Welfare Check
A tense multi-state manhunt finally came to an end Sunday night after authorities captured a man accused of gunning down a Virginia deputy sheriff and wounding another during a deadly confrontation just miles from the North Carolina border.
According to investigators, the violence happened Friday night when deputies with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home along Fancy Gap Highway in Virginia after a concerned family member requested a welfare check.
Authorities say when deputies made contact with 39-year-old Michael Puckett, gunfire suddenly erupted. Both responding deputies were struck during the exchange.
One of those deputies, later identified as Deputy Logan Utt, suffered fatal injuries and died. A second deputy was also hit by gunfire but survived after his ballistic vest reportedly absorbed part of the impact. Officials say that deputy remains in stable condition.
Following the shooting, investigators say Puckett fled the area, which led to an intense search that stretched across state lines and put communities in both Virginia and North Carolina on high alert.
Residents in portions of Surry County were warned to stay vigilant after reports surfaced that the suspect had been spotted near the North Carolina-Virginia border. Law enforcement agencies flooded the region as helicopters, tactical teams, and federal agents joined the search effort.
The hunt finally ended Sunday evening when agents located Puckett at a residence in the Mount Airy area.
Officials say he was armed with a handgun when officers moved in, but he surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.
Puckett is now being held without bond at the Surry County Detention Center and is expected to face an aggravated murder charge.
Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for Deputy Logan Utt.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office described Utt as a dedicated public servant, devoted husband, loving father, and respected member of the community. Before joining the sheriff’s office in 2023, Utt proudly served his country in the military.
