CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – A young U.S. Marine has been declared dead after falling overboard from the USS Iwo Jima during military operations in the Caribbean Sea, the Marine Corps confirmed.

Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, just 21 years old, was reported missing on February 7 after he fell into the water from the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima while deployed in the Caribbean. After a grueling 72-hour, round-the-clock search, authorities officially declared him dead on February 10.

Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, a 21-year-old Marine assigned to Camp Lejeune, was declared dead after falling overboard from the USS Iwo Jima during deployment in the Caribbean Sea.

The massive rescue effort included five U.S. Navy ships, aircraft from multiple branches, drones, helicopter squads and small boat teams — but still came up empty.

The loss is being reported as the first U.S. military death tied to the controversial Operation Southern Spear, the Trump administration’s high-profile Caribbean buildup that has included airstrikes on suspected drug vessels and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Who Was Lance Cpl. Oforah?

Oforah was an infantry rifleman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and a Marine Corps enlistee since October 2023. He completed boot camp at Parris Island in February 2024 before deploying with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Col. Tom Trimble, commander of the 22nd MEU, released a statement saying the unit is “grieving alongside the Oforah family” and that his “dedicated service will not be forgotten.””

At this time, military officials have not disclosed what caused Oforah to fall overboard, and a formal investigation is underway.
